Žďár Castle – town’s community cultural centre In 1991, the aristocratic family of Marie and Constantin Kinský inherited the Castle of Žďár (given back to their relatives by the Czechoslovak state during the post-socialist restituitons). The Castle is a huge complex comprising various residential, administrative, agricultural and sacral buildings, surrounded by a pond (it used to be a large convent between 1252-1784). In modern times, it also hosted the National Museum of Books. Since the Kinský-era, the complex has been restored, opened to the public and commercialized (hotel, conference and concert hall, gallery, café and restaurant, fishing pond, fairs, trades and shows in the gardens and courtyard, thematic summer camps for children). As a result of cooperation between the owners, architects, artists and historians, a completely new museum (Next-Gen Museum) of town and convent history was established and opened within the castle complex. It became immediately admired for its modern audio-visual installations, using light/dark, surroud sounds, virtual holograms, touch-screens and other hi-tech forms of suggestive presentation. The castle is visited by foreign tourists originally attracted by the nearby Zelená Hora Church (UNESCO site) as well as by local inhabitants who often attend various community events organised by the castle management (concerts and shows, periodical fairs, craft-making workshops, dance festivals, food, gallery exhibitions, summer camps for children).

Zámek Žďár nad Sázavou spravuje od roku 1991 rodina Kinských (Marie a Konstantin). Komplex budov se zahradou, nádvořím a rybníkem sloužil od založení v r. 1252 až do zrušení r. 1784 jako klášter. Areál byl v 90. letech zpřístupněn veřejnosti, postupná přestavba budov umožnila jejich komerční využití (hotel, konferenční a koncertní sál, galerie, restaurace, muzeum). Komplex slouží jako kumunitní kulturní středisko města a okolí, pořádají se zde pravidelné trhy, koncerty a vystoupení, pravidelné festivaly-např. taneční, letní tábory pro děti, v areálu je možné rybařit). 1. srpna 2015 bylo otevřeno Muzeum Nové Generace, prezentující dějiny kláštera a města. Netradiční, moderní expozice vznikla ze spolupráce Kinských s architekty, umělci a historiky a využívá nejmodernější technologie (virtuální realita, dotykové obrazovky, světlené a vizuální efekty). Muzeum je stejně jako celý areál navštěvováno jednak (především zahraničními) turisty, jakožto sekundární cíl návštěvy nedalekého Poutního kostela Sv. Jana Nepomuckého na Zelené hoře (památka UNESCO), zároveň jsou pravidelnými návštěvníky místní obyvatelé – účastníci pravidelných veřejných akcí v prostoru zámku (trhy, slavnosti, festivaly-tanec, gastro, letní tánory, řemeslné vyrábění, přednášky a divadelní vystoupení).

Example of successful cooperation between a private investor (Kinský family) and the local community which led to the revitalization and re-creation of a local heritage complex, transformed into a vivid cultural (community) centre. The Museum’s exhibition is an excelent example of how to present local history in a modern attractive way.
